Credit by Examination

In an effort to make the most of their college experience, many Missouri S&T students opt for credit-by-examination. Credits earned through these programs count toward degree requirements and allow qualified students to take advanced courses earlier in their college careers.

Sponsored by the College Entrance Examination Board, this program provides certain college-level courses and related advanced placement exams for top students at participating high schools. Missouri S&T will recognize advanced credit for the tests listed below.

 *Students who took the AP Calculus BC exam in May 2020 can only earn credit for Math 1214, not 1215 due to changes in AP Exams due to Covid-19.

AP REGULATIONS

  • Any student having 90 semester hours or more of acceptable credit are not eligible for AP or CLEP subject exams.
  • AP credit will be awarded for high school students only.
  • An examination may not be repeated in an attempt to earn credit.
  • If there is not a Missouri S&T course equivalency for credit earned, elective credit will be applied as though transferred from another institution. Applies to the following exam: Art.

This program has been developed for students who may have gained knowledge outside the regular classroom. At Missouri S&T, subject examinations are used to award credit for specific coursework when the content of the examination is similar to the course offered. College-level examinations are given at CLEP centers throughout the United States including Missouri S&T. Please check the table below for CLEP subject examinations accepted by Missouri S&T for college credit.

CLEP REGULATIONS

  • Any student having 90 semester hours or more of acceptable credit are not eligible for AP or CLEP subject exams.
  • A score of 57 is required to receive credit for a CLEP exam.
  • At the time of the CLEP exam, present a photo ID and two checks - one for $93 (payable to the CLEP exam sponsor through their website) and one for the $30 proctor fee payable to Missouri S&T (cash or check; no student account billing).

Please note the following: 

  • Must have a C or better.
  • No credit is awarded for Advanced Subsidiary or Ordinary level exams 
  • We must receive an official General Certificate of Education (GCE).

 

Missouri S&T grants advanced placement in military science to:

  • Honorably discharged veterans of active military service
  • High school graduates with at least three years of Junior ROTC
  • Graduates of the Cadet Initial Entry Training, a four-week summer leadership camp at Fort Knox, Kentucky
  • Members of reserve components with basic and advanced training

Military science students must be approved by the professor of military science and have four semesters remaining in school to be considered. Physicals are required. In addition to advanced placement, Missouri S&T awards college credit for military experience in accordance with commendations outlined in A Guide to the Evaluation of Educational Experiences in the Armed Services. Missouri S&T recognizes the International Baccalaureate Diploma for admission, granting course credit and advanced placement to students who have passed higher-level subject examinations at a satisfactory standard. Missouri S&T will not grant credit for standard- level examinations.

1 Students must choose between History 1310 (American History since 1877) or History 1200 (Modern Western Civilization) prerequisites for different advanced courses.
