The instructions below are intended as a guide for the steps you will take if you are a funded student to receive your assistantship. These steps may vary by academic department, so it is important that you carefully review any information provided by your department.
Please note that this entire process can take multiple weeks, therefore, it is highly recommended that you allow yourself a minimum of one month to complete the following steps to receive your stipend payment in a timely manner after enrollment.
- Upon admission, if the department is providing you with an assistantship, you will receive a funding offer letter from your academic department.
- Students must follow any instructions provided by the academic department for acceptance of this offer within the appropriate timeframe.
- If you have not received a funding offer 10 days after receiving your admission decision, please review the information or contact your program's Graduate Coordinator. Receiving an assistantship is not guaranteed with admission.
- At some point after you have accepted the funding offer, the department will ask you to fill out the GRA/GA-Training Acknowledgement or the GTA-Training acknowledgment, GTA training certificate/exception form (depending on which assistantship you are receiving).
- You must follow any additional instructions provided by the academic department at this time. If you have questions regarding steps 1 or 2 of these instructions, please contact your academic advisor or program's Graduate Coordinator.
- After these forms are completed, the department will submit the HIRE ePAF form, which will generate a preboarding email sent to your Missouri S&T email.
- For instructions on setting up your student account and Missouri S&T email, review the New Students Account Setup information.
- You must then follow the instructions in Step 2 of the Human Resources Student Employee Registration.
- During this step, international students must also complete the On-Campus Employment Offer Form and return it to the International Student and Scholar Services office. This cannot be completed until students arrive on campus and complete the international student check in. View the information on this process.
- When the on-campus employment form has been approved, students will receive an email from isss@mst.edu to pick up their on-campus employment form. Students must then use the on-campus employment form to begin applying for a social security number (SSN) through the Social Security Administration. View the instructions on this process.
- Please note that before the form can be approved and returned to you, you must be full-time enrolled. Please follow enrollment instructions from your academic department and the office of Graduate and International Admissions to complete the enrollment process.
- During this step, international students must also complete the On-Campus Employment Offer Form and return it to the International Student and Scholar Services office. This cannot be completed until students arrive on campus and complete the international student check in. View the information on this process.
- Once you have received your SSN, or if you already have a SSN, you may proceed with Steps 3, 4, and 5 to complete the process.

To accept your admission and any funding you may have received, you are required to make an enrollment deposit. The payment of your enrollment deposit should be submitted through your Application Status Page. The enrollment deposit is an advanced tuition deposit that will be credited to your first tuition bill and is non-refundable.
Payment of your enrollment deposit indicates that you are accepting the admission offer and that you wish for us to proceed with the next steps, including review of your documents for I-20/DS-2019 issuance, registration, and transportation accommodations.
Approximately 3 to 5 business days after your enrollment deposit payment has been submitted, you will be invited to the ISSS Gateway Portal. This invitation will be sent to your S&T student email account, so be sure it is activated. You will then request your I-20 through the ISSS Gateway Portal.
The Office of International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) assists with the requirements to maintain F-1 or J-1 visa status monitored by the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of State. Any questions about your I-20 or DS-2019 can be directed to their team at isss@mst.edu.

Missouri S&T does not have graduate student only on-campus housing, however, graduate students are welcome to apply for on-campus housing. All students living on-campus need to submit a housing application through Residential Life.
Graduate students are responsible for securing their own housing in Rolla. There are several off-campus housing options within walking distance to the university. It is very important that you plan ahead to secure your housing and budget accordingly for your personal living expenses.
Keep in mind if you are renting an apartment, it often requires payment of a deposit, which is equal to the first month's rent. In addition to your monthly rent, you will also need to budget for utilities, such as electricity, water, and internet.
A breakdown of the average* monthly living expenses:
- Shared apartment or house: $400-600 per person
- Single Occupancy apartment or house: $500-1000+
- Food and Personal expenses: $250-350
- Transportation: Taxi services are typically around $10 per trip in the city of Rolla
* based on information from current graduate students
Renting housing for the first time in a new country can be daunting. Thankfully, Rent To Own Labs has a guide with clear language and helpful graphics to provide a detailed breakdown of the housing search process, what to consider in choosing housing/types/roommates, and handy things like a housing timeline, checklist, and glossary. We want the transition process to your new home to be as easy as possible so feel free to reach out to us with questions at grad@mst.edu.
When renting a property from a landlord, it is very important to understand your rights as a tenant according to Missouri State Law. A brochure produced by the Office of Missouri Attorney General helps detail your rights as a tenant and the rights of your landlord.
