Tuition Structure

Missouri S&T’s tuition structure makes the costs of a college education more predictable and transparent for you and your family by allowing you to more accurately estimate and plan for college expenses. Our structure consolidates base tuition, supplemental course fees and the information technology fee into one flat rate based on your major. This removes the uncertainty of the previous structure, where your tuition and fees were based on the type of course enrolled.

If you are an undergraduate student, you may take 12 to 18 hours per semester at a single flat rate. By removing the financial barrier of enrolling in additional courses within the flat rate, you can enroll in fuller course loads (15 hours vs. 12 hours) and graduate sooner. This structure also allows you to take exploratory courses at no additional cost. If you are enrolled in a graduate program, you will continue to be assessed on a per-credit-hour basis.

Who Does It Apply To?

The tuition rates apply to everyone enrolled in any of our on-campus degree programs. This includes undergraduate and graduate tuition, resident or non-resident, first-year students (freshmen), and transfer students. This does not include online degree programs.

As you can see from the above table, if you take 12 to 18 credit hours you will be assessed a flat amount per semester. Credit hours outside of that range will be assessed at 1/12 of the flat rate. Student activity fees will be assessed separately.

*If you have fewer than 30 earned or in-progress credit hours, you will be considered a freshman and assessed tuition under the Tier 1 rate. Credits transferred into S&T are counted toward the number of earned credits. However, all first-time college students, regardless of the number of transfer credits, will be assessed the freshman rate their first semester. If you are transferring to S&T from another college or university, the freshman rate does not apply.

Examples using Missouri resident rates

  • Example 1: A freshman engineering major taking 15 credit hours in a semester would be assessed $6,500 per semester.
  • Example 2: A junior engineering major taking 18 credit hours in a semester would be assessed $8,500 per semester.
  • Example 3: A sophomore chemistry major taking 19 credit hours in a semester would be assessed the plateau rate of $7,500 plus $625 for the additional credit hour above 18 hours, or $8,125 in total.
  • Example 4: A junior majoring in engineering and math taking 18 credit hours in a semester would be assessed $8,500 per semester.

Frequently Asked Questions

Missouri S&T offers a flat rate in each tier for full-time students who take a course load of 12-18 hours per semester to encourage taking at least 15 hours each semester. As a Missouri S&T student, you should work with your academic advisor to create a course schedule most appropriate for your learning needs and programs of study. Below are some questions we are frequently asked about tuition.

What is S&T’s tuition structure?

Undergraduate students pay a flat tuition rate according to their major for course loads ranging from 12 to 18 hours.

What is plateaued tuition?

Plateaued tuition means that as an undergraduate student you pay a single, flat rate of tuition when taking 12 to 18 hours of classes a semester. This plan can help you take an average of 15 credit hours per semester. If you want to take more than 15 credit hours, you may take an additional 3 credits at no extra cost per semester.

How are the tiers determined for tuition pricing?

Tuition tiers correspond to the market and cost of delivering the degree, factoring in the cost of specialized facilities, equipment and faculty.

How does this help students graduate sooner?

By keeping tuition the same for course loads between 12 and 18 hours as an undergraduate, you can take additional credits at no additional cost, giving you the opportunity to graduate faster.

Will I pay course fees?

No. Under our model, course fees are included in tuition pricing, giving you and your family a simplified bill. Fees for Health Service and Activity/Facility will remain.

Is the financial aid structure going to change?

No. Missouri S&T will continue to prioritize affordability as we adapt aid packages alongside our tuition model.

What if I haven’t declared a major?

If you have not declared a major, you will be placed in the third tier.

What if I cannot take 15 or more credit hours each semester?

Sometimes work, family, finances or health concerns may require you to adjust your college plans and prevent you from taking 15 hours per semester. In these situations, we encourage you to consider the cost of an additional semester of coursework and consult with your academic advisor on adjusting your schedule.

How can I get more information if I have additional questions?
