CARE GAANN Program

(Civil, Architectural, and Environmental Engineering)

CArE offers two major research areas for GAANN fellows within the civil engineering discipline.

Civil Engineering I

This research focuses on civil infrastructure condition assessment, sustainability and resiliency as it relates to structural engineering and construction materials. Research will encompass the areas of infrastructure and sustainability for the following:

  • Advanced material applications for sustainable infrastructure
  • Innovative structural components and systems
  • Multi-hazards assessment and impact mitigation for resilient transportation network
  • Nondestructive evaluation (NDE) and structural health monitoring

These areas of study and innovation are critically important to maintain the welfare of our global citizens and to increase the resiliency of affected communities.

Civil Engineering II

This research focuses on restoring and improving urban infrastructure using novel engineering solutions. Research will encompass the areas of infrastructure and sustainability for the following:

  • Restoration of urban infrastructure including highways, bridges, tunnels, rail, airports and port and water navigation channels, as well as utility infrastructure
  • Assessment of aging civil infrastructure attacked by increasing natural hazards
  • Development of novel construction materials, new construction and monitoring methods, and automation in construction, repair and maintenance

These areas of study and innovation are critically important to maintain the welfare of our global citizens and to increase the resiliency of affected communities.

PROGRAM BENEFITS

  • Financial support that includes a stipend of up to $34,000 per year (determined by FAFSA)
  • Educational allowance up to $15,750 that covers all educational expenses, including tuition and fees and the cost of textbooks and other materials, computer hardware and software, travel expenditures and registration fees for participation in conferences
  • Mentoring by one or more of the GAANN faculty, as well as industry mentors who include successful alumni of previous GAANN programs
  • Supervised teaching experience, which will be preceded by training in effective teaching techniques
