Freshman Admission

Admission Requirements

If you're planning to attend Missouri S&T in the fall, it's a good idea to submit your application before the December 1 Priority Application Deadline. Meeting that priority deadline will ensure that you're on the best track for all scholarship, housing and registration opportunities.

Missouri S&T admits students who have a strong probability of succeeding at the university. Admission is selective, and is based on a combination of high school core curriculum, ACT and/or SAT scores, class rank percentile, and grade point average (GPA).

The following minimum requirements are established for general admission of first-time college students to Missouri S&T. Meeting the minimum requirements, however, does not guarantee admission. A personal statement may be submitted but is not required. Missouri S&T appreciates well-rounded students and evaluates each application individually.

High School Core Curriculum Requirements

Students planning to attend Missouri S&T should follow a college preparatory curriculum completing at least 17 units of credit. Students wishing to graduate high school before a traditional 8 semesters are considered on a case-by-case basis under close consultation with local school districts and individual circumstances.

  • English: 4 units
(1 unit may be speech or debate; 2 units emphasizing composition or writing skills are required) English 9, 10, 11, 12; English Literature; Speech; Debate; Journalism; etc.
  • Mathematics: 4 units
(Algebra I or higher) Algebra I, Algebra II/Intermediate Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, and Calculus, Math Analysis, etc.
  • Social Studies: 3 units
World History, American History, American Government, Principles of Democracy, etc.
  • Science: 3 units
(Cannot include General Science; 1 unit must be a laboratory course) Biology, Earth Science, Chemistry, Physics, etc.
  • Fine Arts: 1 unit
    Visual Arts, Music, Theater, etc.
  • Single Foreign Language: 2 units

            1 unit = 1 year

Missouri S&T considers credits in the same manner that local high schools organize their coursework. For example, if a high school considers a course as a "science" credit, Missouri S&T will honor that designation by considering the same course a "science" requirement.

Academic Achievement and Standardized Test Scores

Take the ACT or SAT in the spring of your junior year and fall of your senior semester. Missouri S&T considers your highest composite score (or the combined Math and Critical Reading score from the SAT I) for admission and scholarship qualification. The writing sections of the ACT or the SAT will not affect your admission.

Students will be evaluated on a combination of standardized examination percentile (ACT or SAT test), class rank and grade point average (GPA). If the sum of the high school class rank percentile and aptitude examination percentile is:

120 or greater: The student is generally directly admissible. However, the university placement process (math placement exam, etc.) may require remediation and reduced schedules for some students.

100-120: Students in this category may be admitted, but will receive enhanced advising, recommendations for remediation, and reduced academic schedules.

Less than 100: Students in this range are normally admissible only after additional academic development which is not available at Missouri S&T. Students in this category are encouraged to apply to Missouri S&T through the Transfer Assistance Program (TAP).

For example, if you...

  • meet the core curriculum requirements listed above,
  • rank in the top 1/2 of your graduating class (top 50%), and
  • achieved a +24 composite on the ACT exam or +1090 (CR+M) on the SAT exam (placing you in the top 75% nationally of all the students taking the exam)

the sum of your high school class rank percentile and ACT/SAT examination percentile would be 125, and you would generally be admissible to Missouri S&T.
